Why it matters

Detection is conditional

Thermal sensors record temperature contrast—not species identity. Detectability is affected by canopy cover, weather, background temperature, survey timing, animal behaviour, flight height and sensor settings.

For ecological work, we coordinate with the project ecologist to determine whether thermal aerial survey is suitable, define target conditions and align flights with the wider survey design. Visual context, location information and field notes help specialists assess observations.

For suitable marine and coastal work, high-resolution visual surveys may help detect and map observable near-surface animals such as dugongs, marine turtles, rays, sharks or larger fish. Feasibility depends heavily on water depth and clarity, sea state, sun glint, turbidity, animal behaviour and the survey design supplied by the relevant marine specialist.

For pest-animal detection and monitoring, repeat thermal surveys can help identify activity areas, estimate observable numbers under defined conditions, direct ground control and compare patterns after intervention. Results must still account for imperfect detection and changing survey conditions.

Evidence with context

Clear about capability—and limitations

A non-detection is not evidence of absence. Thermal contrast, canopy, terrain, weather, animal behaviour and survey timing affect terrestrial detectability, and thermal imagery alone may not confirm species. Marine visibility is additionally constrained by water depth and clarity, turbidity, sea state, glare, viewing angle and whether animals are at or near the surface. Ecological or marine survey adequacy and species conclusions remain with the relevant specialist; counts are reported within the limits of the agreed detection method.

Planning the work

Can thermal drones identify a species with certainty?

Usually not on thermal imagery alone. Size, movement, location and visual context may assist, but confirmation can require an ecologist, ground inspection or other survey evidence.

Can drones detect dugongs or marine turtles?

Potentially, where animals are at or near the surface and water clarity, depth, sea state, glare and viewing conditions are suitable. High-resolution visual imagery is generally more relevant than thermal sensing for this work. Survey design, identification and conclusions should be led or reviewed by the appropriate marine-fauna specialist.

Can TALONYX monitor pest animals as well as native fauna?

Yes. Thermal surveys can support detection, activity mapping, control planning and repeat monitoring for suitable pest animals, including feral deer, pigs, goats and rabbits. Feasibility depends on habitat, target behaviour and thermal conditions.

Does TALONYX design the ecological survey?

We can contribute operational and sensor advice, but the project ecologist or marine specialist should define ecological objectives, target species, survey adequacy and interpretation where professional expertise is required.

Can TALONYX work as a subcontractor?

Yes. We can work directly with a client or discreetly within an environmental consultancy or project team. Scope, branding, data custody and communication responsibilities can be agreed before mobilisation.

What information is needed for a quote?

A site location or boundary, the project question, timing, intended outputs, access constraints and any relevant survey, approval, treatment or reporting requirements.

Can outputs be supplied for GIS and reporting workflows?

Yes. Deliverables can be prepared for integration with project GIS, consultant analysis and reporting. Formats, coordinate reference systems, metadata and naming conventions are agreed at scoping.

Does TALONYX use AI or automated analysis?

Where it is suitable, automation and AI-assisted methods may help classify observations, identify patterns or accelerate quality checks. They are treated as analytical tools rather than conclusions: outputs remain subject to fit-for-purpose methods, source-data review, validation, documented limitations and human accountability.
